Shedeur Sanders describes what he saw on Hail Mary, overtime vs. Baylor
Colorado‘s 38-31 overtime win at home against Baylor on Saturday is going to be hard to top this college football season as the best finish of the year. Highlighted by a Hail Mary to send the game into overtime and a goal line forced fumbled to finish the game followed by fans storming the field.
Quarterback Shedeur Sanders was the one who thew the game-tying pass and had a front row seat for the dramatic overtime finish. Opening up about the two pivotal turning point moments of the game with teammate Jimmy Horn on his podcast 2Legendary with Shedeur Sanders.
“Well I was definitely thinking I’m not gonna get sacked right here, so I told the running back make sure you secure the edge,” Sanders said talking though the last play of regulation. “I’m rolling out, as I’m rolling to the left … Basically O (Omarion Miller) and Will [Sheppard], they both went towards the middle of the field. Trav (Travis Hunter) came all the way across, like a deep over. And I’m like alright, I know I can fit this one but it wasn’t gonna be a tud.”
Instead of hitting his go-to guy Hunter, the two-way superstar earning early Heisman Trophy buzz, Sanders heaved the ball in the direction of FAU transfer LaJohntay Wester. Who came down with the 43-yard touchdown pass that will be remembered for a long time in Boulder.
“Then I feel the closing seconds, that d-end or something got through the line of scrimmage and he was chasing me,” Sanders said. “Then it was the final second and then I threw it up in like an area and then that was it, then Tay made it happen.”
For as impressive as Sanders’ Hail Mary touchdown pass was, it only tied the Buffaloes’ first Big 12 matchup of the season. Losing the overtime coin toss and leading Colorado to a touchdown drive to start things off, leaving the game in the hands of their defense.
“I told Trav hey bruh, handle the business. I told all the them we need a stop, we need a stop,” Sanders repeated to the defense. “Let’s get it done.”

Sanders admitted he doesn’t like watching Colorado’s defense play, superstitious about the unit performing worse when he watches but better when he turns away and hears the reaction from the crowd. But when Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson scrambled for a 13-yard gain that put the Bears on the two-yard line, he couldn’t help but watch what would unfold next.
“When the quarterback scrambled, he got the first, I’m like dang. Well the pressure’s on them because they’ve got to score twice, so if they would’ve scored that first time then the offense would have been back on the field again because it’s overtime 2,” Sanders explained.
The pressure never flipped back to Baylor, with a Bears run play turning into Hunter forcing a fumble on the one-yard line that would seal the deal for the Buffaloes.
“That play when it was guaranteed touchdown, Trav made that play, I said oh my God … When he fumbled I’m like okay thank you,” Sanders said. “We done got out of here with a good dub, now the week ain’t messed up, we’re at least able to enjoy it a little bit. At least for 24 hours before we gotta get back focused for the next opponent.”
Colorado’s next opponent is UCF, who they’ll travel to Orlando to face this weekend at 3:30 p.m. ET in a game airing on FOX and streaming on Fubo.
