Colorado quarterback Walter Taylor commits to transfer to Ball State
Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Walter Taylor has committed to transfer to the Ball State Cardinals. On3’s Pete Nakos reported the news.
Taylor was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2022 coming out of Jackson in Alabama, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He was the 65th-ranked quarterback in the class and the 1,121st-ranked player overall in that recruiting cycle.
In high school, Taylor led Jackson to the Alabama Class 4-A state semifinals as a senior, earning Back of the Year in the class from the Alabama Sports Writers Association. Taylor began his career with the Vanderbilt Commodores where he spent two seasons.
In the 2022 season, Taylor redshirted, before appearing in five games during the 2023 season. He would then make the decision to transfer out of Vanderbilt and ended up at Colorado under Deion Sanders. There, he’d become a backup quarterback behind Shedeur Sanders.
Over the course of his college career, Taylor has appeared in five games. During that time, he completed five of 15 passes for 44 yards and an interception. On top of that, Taylor has 103 rushing yards on 30 carries with a rushing touchdown.

Now, Taylor is leaving a seemingly ascendant Colorado team that went 9-3 in the 2024 regular season for a Ball State team in a difficult position moving forward. After going 3-9 this season, Ball State made a head coaching change, moving to Mike Uremovich.
Colorado is expecting Shedeur Sanders to move to the NFL following this season. With that, the Buffaloes have already been active in bolstering the quarterback position. Out of high school, Colorado added Julian Lewis, a four-star recruit in the Class of 2025, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. Then, the Buffaloes have Kaidon Salter, a former starter at Liberty, transferring into the program.
Colorado currently has the 36th-ranked transfer class in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 2025 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings. It’s a class that has already seen 16 players exit the program through the portal while 11 transfers have committed to Colorado.
The transfer portal opened on December 9th for one of two windows where players are able to enter the portal during the offseason. The second is set to come following Spring practice, so there is still plenty of time for players to move around the country.
