One of the great rivalries in college football returns this season as Texas and Texas A&M will face off for the first time since 2011. Former Longhorns quarterback and Texas native Colt McCoy is eager for the comeback of not only a game he once played in, but one he and several other fans grew up watching.

McCoy split his games against the Aggies to finish with a 2-2 record in the rivalry, including throwing for 304 yards and four touchdowns in a win during his senior year. Speaking on the Always College Football podcast with Greg McElroy, he expressed his excitement for the matchup on Nov. 30.

“I’m so happy that game is back,” McCoy said. “This game, all of my entire childhood was watching this game on the Friday after Thanksgiving. I had family members that went to A&M and I didn’t know where I was going to go. I remember that game was what you watched. That’s what you did on Thanksgiving. What it meant for your little football community, what it meant for the state. All those things.

“Oklahoma is its own deal. It’s played in the Cotton Bowl. It’s halfway in between Norman and Austin. It’s the tradition split down the middle. Walking through the same tunnel. Texas-Texas A&M is a state rivalry. That is the game. Everyone in Texas tunes in and you know it’s around Thanksgiving. So to bring that game back, holy cow.”

Both teams currently sit tied atop the SEC standings, only adding to the anticipation for the return of this rivalry game. There is still a lot of football to be played between now and then, but there’s a possibility this could be a game with meaning beyond just bragging rights.

Additionally, the game will be played at Kyle Field, which is one of the most revered venues in college football. Based on his own experience playing there, McCoy knows the crowd will be ready for the Longhorns.

“I’ve lost at Kyle Field before and I think that’s one of the coolest places in college football to play,” he said. “I’m not afraid to say that. It’s a great environment. Fans are loud and you can’t hear. They’re swaying and it looks like the stadium’s gonna fall over. It’s a cool place to play.

“Just having that game back and the significance of it now with both being in the SEC, especially at the end of the year, that game will carry a lot of weight for both teams. Especially if A&M can continue to play better and better each week like they have been. It’s a huge game and I’m pumped that it’s back.”

We’ll see how things go for Texas A&M and Texas the rest of the way, but it’s shaping up to be a big-time game when these teams meet on Nov. 30.
