Colt McCoy makes pick for Texas-Michigan Week 2 showdown
Michigan hosts Texas in a Top 10 matchup and the biggest showdown of Week 2. And at least one Longhorn legend is picking his alma mater to roll into the Big House and come away with a signature road win.
That’s what former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy thinks as his former team gears up for the big game. For McCoy, the Longhorns’ advantages begin at the quarterback position.
“I mean look, I went to Michigan last week,” McCoy said on The Triple Option podcast. “I had like — I did a little bit of the broadcast, Michigan-Fresno State. I think they’re a little bit shaky on offense, right? I’m sure their quarterbacks will come along, but that was their first experience, both of them. I thought Davis Warren did a pretty nice job. If we can shut down their tight end, Colston Loveland, he’s one heck of a player. He may be the best tight end in the country and score some points, I think Texas comes out on top.”
Both the Longhorns and Wolverines got to measure themselves at home against a Mountain West foe in Week 1, with varying results. Texas rolled to a 52-0 win over an outmatched Colorado State squad. Quarterback Quinn Ewers went 20-of-27 for 260 yards and three touchdowns, plus an interception and gave way to Arch Manning, who went 5-of-6 for 95 yards and a touchdown.

In Ann Arbor, things were a little wonkier, though two quarterbacks did play in a 30-10 slog win over Fresno State. While Warren got the start for Michigan and had a generally solid performance to build on, it lacked any explosion. And while Alex Orji added some pop as a runner, he was clearly limited as a passer — either by necessity or by choice of the coaching staff. Orji finished 1-of-2 passing for three yards and touchdown on a simple pitch and catch, while rushing five times for 32 yards. Warren finished 15-of-25 passing for 118 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

The biggest challenge for Texas, McCoy thinks, will be handling the still stingy and highly-talented Michigan defense. The Wolverines gave up nine net rushing yards on 22 attempts against Fresno State, and nabbed a pair of interceptions, including a highlight-reel pick six by star cornerback Will Johnson.
As the Wolverines continue to iron out the finer points of new coordinator Wink Martindale’s defense, McCoy expects that unit to continue to be among the best around — and a worthwhile, but manageable, challenge for Texas.
“I know their defense is good, they’re well coached, Wink Martindale coming in from the NFL, from the Giants, Ravens,” McCoy said. “He has a great scheme, he’s got a really great defensive line. But I think Texas boys can go in there and win and I would take them for sure.”
