Colt McCoy was back at Darrel K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday, being inducted into the Texas Athletics Hall of Fame. No matter who is under center at the time, Texas quarterbacks are going to be asked about who is currently on the field. Arch Manning being out there brings extra intrigue to potential questions, though.

Advice to the youngster was handed out from the Longhorns legend. McCoy lumped Quinn Ewers, who will get the starter role back once healthy, in there as well. His message was to just do your job as a quarterback and execute, letting surrounding players make their plays.

McCoy likes the roster head coach Steve Sarkisian has built in Austin, believing they are good enough to win the national championship. Ewers and/or Manning have a chance to produce something special.

“There’s a lot of pressure at playing quarterback at the University of Texas,” McCoy said on the SECN+ broadcast. “There’s an expectation with everything that goes along with being the guy. For them, I would just say you have a wonderful team around you. This team is built to win a championship.

“Just go out there and execute and stay focused on lean on each other. I think they have a great relationship. Coach Sark has done a really nice job, Coach Milwee. So, they’re in really good hands. Just go out there, ignore the noise, and play your game.”

McCoy has been in the shoes of both Ewers and Manning at different points of his career. Back in 2006, McCoy was the young starter without any experience. Flash forward a few years and he was the veteran hoping to lead the program to incredible heights.

Before Ewers led Texas to a Big 12 Championship last season, McCoy was the last quarterback to deliver a conference title in 2009. His team beat Nebraska with a last-second field goal and was placed in the BCS National Championship game against Alabama. McCoy then infamously got hurt and watched Nick Saban win the first of six in Tuscaloosa.

Texas would love to get another conference championship on the resume, especially in their first year as members of the SEC. However, McCoy sees the bigger picture and sees a team capable of eventually winning the College Football Playoff.

A lot of work is still ahead for Ewers, Manning, Sarkisian, and company. SEC play will begin next Saturday against Mississippi State with eight more games after.
