Colt McCoy raves about Arch Manning, decision to backup Quinn Ewers
Texas Longhorns backup quarterback Arch Manning came to college as one of the most highly-anticipated prospects ever thanks to both the family he comes from and his immense talent. Still, now in his second season, he’s continued to act as a backup to Quinn Ewers.
A former Texas quarterback, Colt McCoy, took notice of Manning’s decision to take his time to develop and not transfer out and it’s impressed him in the process.
“I think Arch Manning is the real deal,” Colt McCoy said on The Triple Option. “Spent some time with him. Obviously, he’s got the last name, the pedigree, all those things. But the kid works really, really hard. He’s really smart, and I think it’s a credit to him for sticking around and redshirting and really biding his time to be the starter at Texas.”
Arch Manning came out of high school as a five-star recruit and the top-ranked prospect in the Class of 2023, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. That’s a position where players typically want to play early in their college careers. However, now in his second college season, Manning has been content to develop behind Quinn Ewers.

“I look at some of these games from last weekend,” McCoy said. “Miller Moss, the [Garrett] Nussmeier kid. If you’re a quarterback in college, I would say stay where you are. Wait your time. Learn and grow.”

In his own playing time, Colt McCoy served as a backup to Vince Young and took a redshirt before getting his opportunity. That turned into Texas having arguably its two best quarterbacks ever hand the reins from one to the other.
‘The redshirt year that I had behind Vince — first of all, I was not nearly as high rated as Arch. Nobody knew who I was but the redshirt year was the best thing that ever happened to me. I was able to just really learn the system. I spent a lot of time in the weight room. I played a bunch of sports in high school. So, I really wasn’t ready for a full year of college football. That year helped me a ton. I just look at the quarterbacks that performed the best Week 1 and across the board it seems like those were the guys that kind of waited their time, learned the system, got coached up, and they stepped in there and played really good,” McCoy said.
“Quinn’s great too. Quinn’s in his third year in the system, playing a high level, and I just think that if you’re a high school quarterback across the country or a recruit or somebody who’s kind of stuck in a situation. Maybe the best option is to stick it out because all you really need to go out there is play pretty good for a year and you have a chance.”
A highly-touted prospect in his own right, Ewers has a couple more years worth of experience than Manning and has helped the Longhorns to compete at the top of college football, leading Texas to the College Football Playoff last season.
