Mike Elko is officially in the Texas A&M record books as a winner, as the Aggies leader captured his first victory as the team’s head coach over McNeese State in Week 2 thanks to quarterback Conner Weigman.

Last weekend’s loss against Notre Dame was a bitter pill to swallow for the Aggies. However, Elko got his team back into the right mindset, and after a 52-10 victory against the Cowboys, his quarterback spoke with SEC Network’s Alyssa Lang about the win.

Regarding what his personal goals were for Saturday, Weigman kept it simple: “Just come out here and be a good teammate,” the quarterback stated. “Show what I can do. I know what I’m capable of, and to come out here and put it on display, I feel like we did that this week.”

Additionally, Weigman cited the offense’s efficiency and his connection with the team’s wide receiving corps as positives from Saturday’s game: “Just building that brotherhood,” the Aggies quarterback added.

Victorious in Week 2, Mike Elko, Conner Weigman and the Aggies will now turn their attention to the Florida Gators in Week 3, as Texas A&M tries to get over .500 and not look back over the rest of the season.

Moreover, Texas A&M received some positive news on the injury front before their clash with the Cowboys, wide receiver Jabre Barber suited up on Saturday after missing last weekend’s game with an injury.

It was great to see Barber get on the field, even if he didn’t record a catch, but he did field a punt. Prior to the game, eead coach Mike Elko gave a positive update on Barber earlier in the week.

“Yeah, I think he’s progressing and I think we’re getting a little bit closer,” Elko said. “I don’t know if I have a firm grip on exactly when we’ll be able to get him back out there, but I think he’s for sure getting closer and we’re excited to get him out there.”

Barber was one of the team’s key offseason acquisitions from the NCAA transfer portal, arriving in College Station after spending four years at Troy.

However, he suffered an injury to his foot that required surgery this spring, sidelining him for several months. An exact timetable for a return wasn’t originally established, but the Aggies are hopeful he can still contribute this fall now that he’s healthy.

In total at Troy, Barber caught 132 passes for 1,674 yards, good for over a dozen yards per reception, and 10 touchdowns. He also returned 25 kicks for 285 yards. He returned 16 punts for 83 yards at an average of 5.2 yards and nine kickoffs for 202 yards at 22.4 per return.
