Texas A&M Aggies HANDLE Florida Behind QB Marcel Reed | Why Mike Elko Should Have NEW QB1

Texas A&M Aggies head coach Mike Elko shared an injury update on Conner Weigman, revealing good news that the imaging he had on his shoulder didn’t reveal any new problems.

This comes after Weigman was forced to miss Texas A&M’s Week 3 game on the road against the Florida Gators. He had apparently suffered the injury in the season opener against Notre Dame, though he played through the issue, now known to be an AC sprain, in the Aggies’ Week 2 game.

“No updates on the plans for Saturday,” Mike Elko said. “The imaging did turn out good. So, we didn’t find any more problems than we were dealing with. It’s an AC sprain. Everything else is very much intact.”

This is Conner Weigman’s third season at Texas A&M. He was the starter in 2023 before an injury ended his season early and he ended up taking a redshirt. Now, looking to avoid missing an extended period of time due to this injury, Weigman is working his way back on the field.

“So, we’re just in the process now of recovery and rehab and trying to figure out where he can get himself to,” Elko said. “If he’s able to throw it around a little bit today, which is kind of how Wednesdays have gone, and we’ll kind of see what it’s like on the back end of the week as we make our decision for Saturday.”

In place of Conner Weigman, Mike Elko started Marcel Reed against the Florida Gators on Saturday. He played well with that opportunity, completing 11 of 17 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Reed’s play got the attention of a lot of people around the country, including former head coach Steve Spurrier, who said that based on what he’s seen, Reed is better than Weigman.

“[Mike] Elko, luckily, his starter got hurt because the other kid is a much better player,” Spurrier said. “My grandson is an assistant quarterback coach at A&M. His fiancée, she was happy that backup quarterback got in there instead of the one that was the starter the first game. So maybe they’ve learned a lot their third game of the year also.”

Texas A&M is going to be playing Bowling Green this week before getting back into SEC play. For now, it’s unclear who Elko will start at quarterback.
