Cotton Bowl releases statement on potential weather threats in Dallas area
Arlington, TX is set to host Friday’s Cotton Bowl between Ohio State and Texas, with the winner heading to the College Football Playoff national championship. Plenty of talking points surround the matchup and weather in the local area is one of them. Freezing temperatures and potential snow are expected in North Texas ahead of kickoff.
The Cotton Bowl has released a statement regarding the situation, saying they are monitoring forecasts. If there is any further information or changes made to the event, the Cotton Bowl will relay to everyone associated with the CFP semifinal.
“We are routinely monitoring weather reports and we are in close contact with AT&T Stadium and local officials,” the statement said. “We always have plans for inclement weather. Should conditions warrant it, we will communicate to everyone attending and connected with this year’s Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.”
A high of 38 degrees is expected in Arlington and a low of 30 on Friday. The forecast has a 75% chance of snow is actually lower than the 90% for Thursday. Many in DFW may have been cheering for a white Christmas but instead, they should receive a snow-filled College Football Playoff matchup.

For now, the expectation is that kickoff will take place at 6:30 p.m. CT from AT&T Stadium. Ohio State heads South after taking down Oregon out West, winning the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day. Texas also beat a conference championship, squeaking out a double overtime thriller vs. Arizona State in the Peach Bowl.
“Just like to say first of all, it’s an honor to represent the SEC in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl,” Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said. “This game has been notorious for great games and great teams over the years. Obviously, this being a semifinal game of the College Football Playoff, it’s definitely an honor to be a part of this.”
Ohio State’s Ryan Day opened up his initial Cotton Bowl press conference in a similar way, saying “Honored to be a part of the Cotton Bowl again. Just a tremendous bowl. And I’ve said this many times that the Cotton Bowl does a great job in their hospitality. Everybody there takes a lot of pride in the bowl, and it’s a great setting.”
