Fans of Eric Church were readying to see the country music star perform live on Saturday at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas. However, their dreams were dashed — Church canceled the concert, and the reason isn’t sitting well with many of his fans.

On Tuesday, Church canceled the event so he could attend the Final Four, specifically to watch his beloved North Carolina Tar Heels take on the Duke Blue Devils. In a message via Ticketmaster, Church revealed the news that he wasn’t going to be performing while the Tar Heels took the court.

“To the Church Choir,” started Church, speaking to his fanbase. “This Saturday, my family and I are going to stand together to cheer on the Tar Heels as the team has made it to the Final Four.

“As a lifelong Carolina basketball fan, I’ve watched Carolina and Duke battle over the years but to have them matchup in the Final Four for the first time in the history of the NCAA Tournament is any sports enthusiast’s dream. This is also the most selfish thing I’ve ever asked the Choir to do to give up your Saturday night plans with us so that I can have this moment with my family and sports community. However, it’s that same type of passion felt by the people who fill the seats at our concerts that makes us want to be part of a crowd at a game of this significance.

“Woody Durham always said, ‘Go where you go and do what you do,’ thanks for letting me go here and be with the Tar Heels.”

All fans who bought tickets to Saturday’s show will receive a refund for these tickets. However, Eric Church may lose a couple of fans for his cancellation, especially ones that root for Duke.

Moreover, Eric Church has been on the sidelines for numerous North Carolina games in the past. He’s not shy about his love for the Tar Heels, and was even in Philadelphia this past weekend for the Sweet 16 and the Elite Eight.

While some avid sports fans will see where Church is coming from, others will be unhappy with the musician. He made a commitment to the people of San Antonio, and he’s bailing on his lone stop of his tour in the city. It’s not going to be a popular move for the country star, especially for his fans that don’t watch basketball.

Nevertheless, Eric Church will be in New Orleans for the highly-anticipated showdown between North Carolina and Duke. Evidently, angering his fanbase is a fair trade off to see his Tar Heels with a chance to end Mike Krzyzewski’s career.
