After coming up short in the Wild Card round at the NFL playoffs, yet again, the Dallas Cowboys have wasted very little time repositioning their coaching staff. And on Wednesday, ESPN’s Cowboys reporter, Todd Archer, revealed that the franchise has made more moves ahead of the start of the 2023 offseason.

“Cowboys coaching staff updates, per multiple sources: Jeff Blasko has moved from assistant OL coach to run game coordinator/RBs coach; Scott Tolzien will be quarterbacks coach; Scott McCurley will re-take the LB spot; Cannon Matthews will be the assistant defensive backs coach,” said Archer via Twitter.

McCurley will retake his position as Dallas’ linebacker coach. He has spent the majority of his coaching tenure under Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy. McCurley started his coaching career with Green Bay in 2006, a few years prior to McCarthy making it to the Packers. He has held a handful of positions under the Cowboys’ headman. Still, he’s only been an assistant and primary linebacker coach since joining the Cowboys franchise.

Matthews has been on the Cowboys coaching staff since McCarthy took over the reins in 2020. Matthews has a total of 15 years of coaching experience and has worked with multiple franchises around the league, including the Washington Commanders, Cleveland Browns, and Tennessee Titans. He even spent one season (2008) in the Arena Football League as a personnel intern with the then-Arizona Rattlers.

Cowboys make changes to offensive coaching staff too

Blasco has been with the Cowboys since 2020, when he followed Mike McCarthy to the franchise. He worked for McCarthy with the Green Bay Packers from 2016-2018, primarily as the Packers assistant offensive line coach. Blasco’s lone year away from the Cowboys headman, 2019, was spent with the Cleveland Browns as their assistant offensive line coach.

Tolzien replaces Doug Nussmeier, who left with former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to join the Los Angeles Chargers coaching staff. Prior to the move, Tolzien was an assistant on Dallas’s coaching staff. He is also familiar with McCarthy after playing for him from 2013-2015 with the Packers.
