Dallas Cowboys cornerback Jourdan Lewis will not take the field during the team’s Sunday afternoon game against the Washington Commanders, the team announced. Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News reports that the injury presumably arose during warmups.

A third-round pick out of Michigan in the 2017 NFL Draft, Lewis has been with Dallas for the entirety of his NFL career. Through the first three games of the 2022 season, Lewis has 16 total tackles, 12 of which were solo. He has not recorded a pass deflection or an interception.

Lewis signed a three-year contract extension with the Cowboys in March of 2021, worth a max of $16.5 million. In his first year under the new contract, Lewis had 61 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, and three interceptions. Lewis proved his worth and created plenty of reason for optimism this season, according to Cowboys writer David Helman, who explained more ahead of the season.

“It’s fair to say this entire Cowboy cornerback crew had a career outing in Dan Quinn’s first season as defensive coordinator,” Helman wrote. “Like Anthony Brown, Jourdan Lewis didn’t reach the dizzying highs of Trevon Diggs, but there’s no debating that the 2021 season was his best since getting drafted 92nd overall back in 2017. Lewis played 16 games and made 13 starts as the Cowboys’ nickel back, setting career highs for interceptions (3) and pass breakups (11). ProFootballFocus graded Lewis at a decent 62.1 in coverage, with 54 receptions on 81 targets on the year.”
