Mike McCarthy talks relationship with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones
Although there was much speculation regarding the job status of Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy following the end of the 2021 season, team owner and general manager Jerry Jones has made it clear that the head coach isn’t going anywhere – at least not anytime soon. Jones has said on multiple occasions that McCarthy is his head coach, and he’ll continue to lead the Cowboys moving forward.
While McCarthy – who is 18-15 with no postseason wins in two seasons as the Cowboys’ head coach – hasn’t achieved expectations, Jones and the organization are still committed to the head coach and think he’s the man for the job – and so does McCarthy himself.
In a recent interview on The Rich Eisen Show, McCarthy discussed his relationship with Jones and shared that he is solely focused on winning games.
“As far as what happens next and all that, I think that’s really just part of the landscape,” McCarthy said. “Jerry’s the owner, he’s the GM. … He’s always taken a 360-degree view of everything. I think it’s like anything in life. We have a lot of one-on-one conversations – we’ve discussed all these things. I never once felt that I was not going to be the head coach moving forward.

“I think that players, coaches, football operations is really my main hold. I’m the leader of this football team, and I’m about winning. That’s all I’ve ever focused on, and that’s all I ever will focus on.”
Dallas is coming off a 12-5 season in 2021, which included a loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Wild Card round. While 12 wins in a season was a step forward for the Cowboys after they won just six games in 2020 and eight in 2019, their lack of success in the postseason is what led to the speculation of McCarthy’s job status heading into the offseason.
