Dan Hurley calls out officiating, doubles down on tech following upset to Memphis

Dan Hurley was not too happy with Monday’s officiating against Memphis in the Maui Invitational. The UConn head coach was working the refs all afternoon but emotions finally boiled over in overtime. After Liam McNeeley was called for an over-the-back, Hurley was called for a technical foul. Memphis got two extra free throws, made both, and the game’s difference wound up being two.
Following the game, Hurley was still less than thrilled with how the game unfolded. He doubled down on his technical foul and decided to call out the three officials. Hurley claimed to be “not surprised” based on two calling the game, while he was not familiar with another.
“I had a lot of issues with what went on,” Hurley said. “That over-the-back call, at that point of the game, there was no attempt to block out. There was a player on Memphis that made a half-ass effort to rebound that basketball and Liam McNeeley high-pointed the rebound. For that call to be made was a complete joke… How you can call that while that game was going is just beyond me.”
Directly after the game, Seth Greenberg stated that Hurley’s actions wound up costing UConn the game. While it was not a direct response to the ESPN analyst, Hurley disagreed and thinks the officials played a bigger role than his technical foul.

“I think it was the shitty calls,” Hurley said. “I would expect to come to play in an event, and I don’t know too many back-to-back national championship teams that get that type of a whistle.”
UConn was 4-0 entering the day but had not faced a high level of competition yet. Heading out West to Maui provided them the opportunity but the first was failed. Memphis wound up winning in overtime, a win Penny Hardaway needed for his program. Another chance awaits the Huskies in the loser’s bracket and the opponent depends on the outcome of Colorado–Michigan State.
Hurley certainly will be hoping for a different trio of officials to be on the court Tuesday afternoon.
