Dan Mullen makes case for Miami over Alabama in College Football Playoff
In what could wind up being the final at-large bid, the College Football Playoff committee decided to rank Alabama No. 11 over Miami. A huge decision with the Crimson Tide having three losses and Mario Cristobal‘s team just two. A lot of controversy has come from the decision and led to others giving out opinions.
One is ESPN analyst Dan Mullen, saying his gut would have been to give Miami the nod over Alabama. However, as Mullen begins his explanation, his big point was in regards to having the best wins. He cites how difficult winning is compared to losing.
“I would’ve gone Miami over Alabama,” Mullen said on The Pat McAfee Show. “That would be me on the outside. But when I really dig into it, then I’d be a hypocrite. To me, winning has always been the most important thing. Don’t tell me about your great loss, winning is what matters…
“When you look at it and you really break it down, Alabama has better wins than Miami. They also have worse losses. In the big picture, me and my gut, I would have gone Miami over Alabama but then I’d be a hypocrite saying winning is the most important thing. If you compare the wins, Alabama has better wins.”

Alabama’s best win arguably stacks up against any in college football. Georgia came to Tuscaloosa on Sept. 28 and held on in the fourth quarter after a blazing hot start in the first half. Victories against ranked Missouri and South Carolina teams certainly stand out as well.
Miami did secure 10 regular season wins but none against teams in Tuesday’s College Football Playoff top 25. Eight-win Louisville is likely the most impressive of the bunch, while Florida’s late resurgence makes the season opener blowout look better.
On that comparison, Mullen has to believe the quality wins from Alabama would be enough to get them into the 12-team field. Even so, his gut says Miami deserved the spot and should have gotten in.
