Following a chaotic Week 6 of college football, former head coach and current analyst Dan Mullen released his Top 25 college football rankings.

Week 6 was highlighted by several major upsets. That included Alabama, Tennessee, Missouri, Michigan, and USC losing their games. At the time, all of those teams were in the top 11 of the AP Poll. By the time the week was over, seven Top 25 teams fell. It was one of the most upset-riddled weeks in recent memory and it changed how many are looking at the field of teams this season.

Check out the entirety of the Top 25 college football teams in the country, according to Dan Mullen, here:

1. Texas Longhorns

The Texas Longhorns are coming off a bye week in Week 6. Still, amid the chaos that was the week, the Longhorns managed to land the top spot in Mullen’s rankings. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Texas has a marquee win this season over Michigan and that the Longhorns have been dominant even amid injury concerns.

Next week is Red River and Texas knows it needs to be at its best against a talented Oklahoma Sooners team. The hope for Texas is that starting quarterback Quinn Ewers will be able to return from injury and lead the Longhorns in that game. If he’s not able to, however, Arch Manning has proven himself plenty capable.

2. Ohio State Buckeyes

There has been some criticism of Ohio State for the team’s weak non-conference slate. However, the Buckeyes did manage to dominate it. Now, with a pair of Big Ten conference wins, which also came in dominant performances, it’s easy to see why Dan Mullen thinks so highly of the Buckeyes. This team is talented and has proven it all season.

From here, the schedule gets much more difficult for Ohio State, though. The Buckeyes are traveling to Oregon to take on the Ducks. That’ll be a tough game. From there, the schedule stays tough, with games against teams like Penn State, Michigan, and Indiana among others. All of those could present problems.

3. Miami Hurricanes

The Miami Hurricanes are unbeaten through six games this season. However, in ACC play, things have been a little tense. In each of their last two games, the Hurricanes had to come from behind to win. Each of those games also came with some controversy as it related to the officiating.

Despite those issues, Miami did manage to win those games and with that, they’re in position to make noise this season. That’s probably why Mullen has them ranked so highly. After all, with a Heisman contender in Cam Ward at quarterback, there is a lot to like about this Miami team.

4. Oregon Ducks

After a little bit of a slow start to the season for Oregon, the incredibly talented Ducks team has looked better and better as the season goes on. That includes in Big Ten play, where the Ducks are 2-0 and have outscored their opponents 75-23. Still, there’s room for a more consistent performance.

Oregon will need to find that more consistent performance quickly with Ohio State coming to town. The Buckeyes are one of the best teams in the country and issues like turnovers could easily come back to bite them in a big game like that. A win would propel Oregon to the top of most rankings but a loss likely wouldn’t be overly costly, given the caliber of the opponent.

5. Penn State Nittany Lions

The Penn State Nittany Lions have been riding an excellent defense to this point in the season, holding opponents to just 11.4 points per game. That’s eighth in the country in scoring defense. At the same time, the Nittany Lions have plenty of talent on offense at every position. That makes Penn State a very tough team to stop.

Dan Mullen has Penn State fifth in the country. However, like many teams, the most difficult parts of the schedule are still to come. The Nittany Lions still have several tough games against Big Ten opponents upcoming where they’ll likely need to see some more explosiveness from their offense.

6. Pitt Panthers

Dan Mullen differs from most polls with how he feels about the Pitt Panthers. Through five games, Pitt is unbeaten with several close and come-from-behind wins to their name. That includes a win in their ACC opener over North Carolina and, with that, the Panthers are looking to make a push for the conference championship game.

A major strength of Pitt has been the quarterback position. Redshirt freshman Eli Holstein came over as a transfer from Alabama and since getting his opportunity has thrown for 1,567 yards and 15 touchdowns to only three interceptions. If he can keep going strong, so can Pitt.

7. Indiana Hoosiers

One of the biggest surprises of the season has been the Indiana Hoosiers. In their first season under head coach Curt Cignetti, the Hoosiers are unbeaten at 6-0. That comes a season after Indiana went 3-9 and is pretty remarkable. Whether or not Indiana can keep the good times rolling, it’s clear that Cignetti is doing a phenomenal job early in his tenure.

The schedule is going to intensify a bit in the second half. That includes Michigan and Ohio State in back-to-back games this November. However, the the time being, there’s a lot to like here and it’s clear that Dan Mullen really likes this team.

8. Iowa State Cyclones

Very few teams have found the type of success this season that Iowa State has. Now at 5-0, the Cyclones have proven that they have one of the best defenses in the entirety of the Big 12. Because of that, Iowa State is a real threat to not just compete for a conference championship but the College Football Playoff.

In their most recent win, Iowa State took on the Baylor Bears. That game was relatively close during the early stages and for a while it looked like the Cyclones might be one of the several AP Top 25 teams who lost during Week 6. However, Iowa State settled down and pulled away in the second half on the back of a two touchdown game from running back Jaylon Jackson.

9. BYU Cougars

BYU is another Big 12 team that is overperforming expectations this season. At 5-0, the Cougars are a real threat to compete for the conference championship at this point in the season. With that, BYU is also a potential competitor for the College Football Playoff, which is at least partially being shown by where Mullen has the team ranked.

The Cougars are coming off a bye week to start October. Now, BYU is facing an interesting slate of conference opponents, all of whom are capable on paper but have shown some inconsistencies throughout the season that the Cougars haven’t so far.

10. Alabama Crimson Tide

The Alabama Crimson Tide have been on a bit of an emotional roller coaster. They went from earning the best win of the season one week taking out the Georgia Bulldogs, to having a major upset loss when they dropped one against Vanderbilt. With that, Mullen feels like 10th is about the right place for Alabama in his rankings.

The schedule ahead is, of course, a challenging one in the SEC. There’s no way around that. At the same time, the Crimson Tide are still incredibly talented. That much is clear. On top of that, given the new postseason format, they’re very much in the discussion moving forward.
