Danny Kanell and Chipper Jones exchanged a few words on social media after Navy beat Oklahoma in the Armed Forces Bowl on Friday. Kanell took to X following the 21-20 win for the Midshipmen to congratulate them on the win.

Kanell posted the final score and then pointed out that the Sooners beat Alabama by a score of 24-3 in the regular season, adding “God bless our troops.” However, Jones took exception to Kanell seeming to insinuate that Navy would beat Alabama, quoting the tweet to voice his disagreement.

“Same, same…..lazy journalist speak,” the former Atlanta Braves star wrote. “How bout undefeated FSU getting dusted by 60 last yr without 20 guys?….same, same? Come on DK.”

Oklahoma was down 25 players that either entered the transfer portal or opted out of the bowl game against Navy. So it’s safe to say that this was nowhere close to the same team that competed against Alabama in the regular season.

It’s a similar situation to the one that Florida State, which is Kanell’s alma mater, found itself in last season after failing to make the College Football Playoff. The Seminoles would have several players opt out and go on to lose

Even so, the Sooners got off to a quick start to the contest and led 14-0 by the end of the first quarter. However, they would not score again until late in the fourth when Michael Hawkins found Jake Roberts for a 10-yard touchdown to make it 21-20 with six seconds remaining.

Instead of kicking the extra point to send it into overtime, OU opted to go for the two-point conversion and attempt to win the game. However, it fell short as Navy got the stop to hang on for the victory.

Kanell bit back after the response to his initial tweet from Jones.

“I am absolutely NOT a journalist,” he wrote. “Sorry for posting the score and saluting our troops. I thought we were all on the same team in that area.”

Navy closed out the year with a 10-3 record, while OU ends at 6-7. It marks the second losing season in three years for the Sooners under coach Brent Venables and they certainly have a lot of work to do to get the program back to where it is expected to be.

Regardless, the result of the game certainly provided some interesting discussion for Danny Kanell and Chipper Jones.
