No. 6 Ole Miss fell to Kentucky at home on Saturday, immediately firing up the takes machine as experts rushed to get their thoughts out on the early result of the day.

Commentator Danny Kanell had a particularly spicy take.

“Blowing out a bunch of nobody’s does not make you a national title contender,” Kanell wrote on Twitter. “Ole Miss got exposed.”

Ole Miss had certainly beaten up on its early slate of opponents this season. The Rebels entered Saturday’s contest against the Wildcats with the nation’s top-ranked offense, averaging about 670 yards per game.

Kentucky managed to hold Ole Miss to just 353 yards, stymieing Lane Kiffin‘s offense and throwing him off-kilter for the majority of the afternoon.

Of course, the result from Saturday may not come as a huge surprise to Kiffin. He himself had noted going into the contest that he didn’t think Ole Miss had been adequately prepared for SEC play.

And even though Kentucky wasn’t exactly an SEC juggernaut, it had proven it could hang with some of the elite teams in the league, evidenced by a narrow 13-12 loss to Georgia in prior weeks.

“I’m a realist,” Kiffin said. “I don’t think our opponents have really prepared us for the SEC play. My hope is our practice and our fall camp has prepared us because we play against really good players on both sides of the ball. Defensively, we play against really big linemen. Same on the other way around.

“The schedule, it is what it is. I hope that our practice has because our practice is similar to what we face.”

Now, we’ll have to wait to see how far Ole Miss falls down the national rankings following the big upset.

Ole Miss retains its playoff hopes despite the loss and could still reach them thanks to the expanded field in 2024, with the format changing to a 12-team playoff.

Still, it was a loss that stings. And there’s not much that can be said at this point to dispel Kanell’s claim.
