Danny Kanell takes shot Texas resume following SEC title loss, calls out potential SEC bias
While Georgia celebrated inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, heartbreak took place on the Texas end. The first-ever SEC Championship in program history ended in a tough loss for the Longhorns. While they are still likely safe for the College Football Playoff, Steve Sarkisian wanted to win this one.
Not everybody is convinced with the resume Texas has put together this season, though. Danny Kanell took a shot at Texas following the SEC Championship, citing the amount of ranked wins they will end the regular season with — zero. And even so, the Longhorns might wind up being the highest-ranked at-large team.
“Texas won’t have a win over a Top 25 team,” Kanell said via X. “More importantly they have two losses to Georgia and they play in the SEC now so they’re what…prob like 5 or 6 seed?”
According to ESPN, Texas ranks No. 32 in strength of schedule. That was heading into Saturday’s SEC Championship game. Playing Georgia will bump the metric up a few spots, a benefit not many teams in college football will get in conference championship weekend.
Texas does have four wins against teams who were ranked at the time. However, all of them have since dropped out of the top 25. Texas A&M is the most recent in the season finale. The Aggies were No. 20 during the showdown in Kyle Field but the CFP committee moved them out on Tuesday.

You can add Michigan, Oklahoma, and Vanderbilt to the list as well. All of them wound up being bowl-eligible but Texas A&M has the best record at 8-4, not being enough to get into the top 25. Nothing will change either since everyone was idle.
Where Texas winds up seeded on Sunday will be a big point of discussion, especially against a team like Notre Dame. Depending on the Big Ten Championship outcome, Penn State could be in quite a similar situation.
Kanell believes Texas might wind up getting a huge benefit of the doubt, thanks to joining the SEC this season.
