Virginia guard Dante Harris has withdrawn from the NCAA transfer portal, On3’s Pete Nakos has learned. He started his career at Georgetown before joining the Cavaliers last year.

Harris averaged 2.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.4 assists for UVA this past year after an impressive 2022-23 season at Georgetown. He averaged 11.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 4.1 assists before entering the portal and joining Tony Bennett’s group.

Dante Harris played high school basketball at Lakeway Christian School (D.C.), where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 254 overall recruit in the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

UVA is coming off an up-and-down season in 2023-24, but made the NCAA Tournament as one of the last four teams in the field and headed to Dayton for the First Four. However, the Cavaliers fell to Colorado State 67-42 to end the season with a 23-11 record, including 11-7 in ACC play.

Over the offseason, Virginia has been active in the transfer portal, bringing in five players from the open market. That includes former Duke forward TJ Power – the No. 68 overall player in the On3 Industry Transfer Rankings – and former Kansas State guard Dai Dai Ames.

UVA is also preparing to add two high school recruits, headlined by four-star PF Jacob Cofie. He came in as the No. 85 overall player from the 2024 cycle and top player in the state of Washington, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.

Changes could be coming to the transfer portal

The transfer portal window officially closed May 1 this year after a 45-day window. However, that period could shorten after the Division I Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee recommended changes.

The committee recommended reducing the current transfer window to 30 days, according to a committee report. With that, the portal would then open after the end of the second round of the NCAA Tournament rather than after Selection Sunday, which is when transfers can currently begin to enter under the current setup.

In its recommendation, the committee said 68% of teams’ seasons end by Selection Sunday and by moving the window back a week, it would give those athletes time to catch up on their school work before making their transfer decisions. Additionally, according to the committee, 91% of teams’ seasons end by the Monday after the second round of March Madness.

The committee recommended the NCAA Division I Council introduce such legislation at its June 2024 meeting so it fits into the October 2024 governance cycle.
