It’s been another year, another win against Ohio State, and the remaining balance of 365 more days of riding high for Michigan fans. That includes one Dave Portnoy.
And when he bumped into Urban Meyer, previously the bane of the existence of Michigan football when he coached Ohio State, at the Army–Navy game on Saturday, Portnoy couldn’t resist a victory lap or two. He prodded Meyer on reports he was wanted back at the helm in Columbus and that current head coach Ryan Day would be fired if Ohio State doesn’t win the national championship.
“They need you back. I don’t know if it’d make a difference. Let me ask you this, if they win the national championship, they’re still going to fire him, right? You do” Portnoy said, as Meyer chuckled and took the needling in stride.
He appeared to say that Woody Hayes would concur, alluding to the fact that the legendary Buckeyes coach found it intolerable to lose to Michigan, even if Ohio State was still considered the best team in America.

And Portnoy then got his final dig in, along those lines.
“Season, they’re playing — might as well not even show up. Season’s over,” Portnoy said.
Michigan defeated Ohio State, 13-10, on Nov. 30 in Ohio Stadium in a shock upset as multi-touchdown underdogs, securing a fourth-straight win over the Buckeyes and creating plenty of anxiety in Columbus about how much Day can truly achieve as the head coach as Ohio State gears up for the College Football Playoff.
Meyer, for his part, addressed public clamoring for his return to the sideline, shooting down the idea he would coach again.
“It has come to my attention that there are reports speculating my return to the sidelines in Columbus. While I thoroughly enjoyed my seven seasons as head coach at THE Ohio State University, I have no interest in coaching again. I will always be a Buckeye and have the full confidence in Ryan Day, his staff, and every player that puts on the Scarlet and Gray,” Meyer said in a statement.
