Dayton-Fordham delay: Basketball game paused due to leak in arena roof

There was a delay in the DaytonFordham college basketball game on Wednesday evening, after officials discovered there was a leak in the roof. The floor had to be cleaned up a bit, but there was a brief stoppage in play. Here’s the floor getting cleaned up.

Play eventually resumed and Dayton took care of business, handling Fordham 93-76. The Flyers had five players in double digits, including Malachi Smith (leading scorer) and Javon Bennett, who dumped in 18 points and 16 points, respectively. Bennett chipped in four rebounds and three assists. Smith had five assists, three steals, and just one turnover.

The game was tied 48-48 at the end of the first half, but Dayton managed to pull away in the second half, outscoring Fordham by seventeen points after halftime. The Flyers drilled 11 of their 22 shots from deep in the second half, putting them at 50% for the game.

It’s the fourth time this season Dayton has shot 50% or better from beyond-the-arc.

The Flyers also hit 29 of their 54 shots from the field, drilling 53.7%. Dayton also got 12 fast break points, compared to four for Fordham.

The Rams finished with a number of players in double digits, including Jackie Johnson III, who led the team with 24 points. Japhet Medor had 17 points and chipped in three assists for the Rams. Josh Rivera had 17 points and three rebounds. Dayton outrebounded Fordham 30-28 on the glass.

Dayton improved to 37-6 in their overall series against the Rams. The Flyers have won five straight games against Fordham since their 55-54 loss in Rose Hill Gym in 2021. Prior to the loss, Dayton had won 16 straight games in the series since a loss at Fordham in 2006.

With the win, Dayton moved to 17-8 overall and 7-5 in the Atlantic 10. Fordham dropped to 11-13 overall and 3-8 in the Atlantic 10. The Rams are half a game ahead of the Richmond Spiders (8-17, 3-9 overall), who are in last place.
