Deion Sanders explains why he chose Colorado, hints at past Florida State interest

Deion Sanders knows he made the right decision by coming to Colorado. Now preparing to enter his second year as the Buffaloes head coach, he had multiple other options on where to go.
It was even briefly rumored that Sanders was a candidate to take over at his alma mater of Florida State before Mike Norvell got things going for the Seminoles. Speaking on the Outta Pocket podcast with Robert Griffin III he revealed how he ultimately landed in Boulder.
“I think (Florida State) was an option early on,” Sanders said. “I’m going to stay away from that. I’m a praying man, first and foremost, and God never sends me where I would be comfortable. He always sends me where I’m uncomfortable that it’s my job to make things comfortable. So I can’t be mad at the decisions other colleges made by me not going that way or I’m not being received there. I know we made the right choice for what God desired in my life. The same thing with Jackson (State).
“Nobody saw Jackson. Nobody saw that move. I didn’t even see that move. Once I prayed about it, I saw it, but this move right here happened at a restaurant. I called all of them and said, ‘hey, God just spoke to me. We’re going to Colorado.’ That’s where ‘We coming’ comes from. I said, ‘Rick, we coming.’ That’s where that slogan came from. So God always sends me to desolate places to do some dominant things.”

Deion Sanders previously spent three seasons coaching Jackson State prior to taking over at Colorado. He directed the Tigers to a 27-6 record in that span as well as SWAC Conference Championships in his final two years.
The Buffaloes were coming off of a 1-11 season before Sanders took over and began his inaugural year 3-0 to even briefly enter the top 25. They ended 4-8 but the progress made in Year 1 was evident and has many excited for what’s in store over the next few seasons.
The first goal to reach is simply to make a bowl game, but it’s clear Sanders has much higher expectations in mind for the long run. With talent such as Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders returning this season, it will definitely be interesting to see how things play out in Colorado.
