Deion Sanders on North Dakota State: 'They're not gonna beat themselves'
Colorado is going to play one of the best FCS opponents that you can with North Dakota State coming to open up in Boulder tonight. Deion Sanders knows the challenge that it’ll be too with the history of their program.
Sanders praised the Bison during his coaches show ahead of their opener against one another. He sees a record of years’ worth of success that tells him all he needs to know about NDSU. Actually, it even reminds him of some of the teams from coaching at the prep level in Texas.
“They are a winning tradition of a school that plays football,” said Sanders. “It’s almost like – I’m trying to give you an analogy. Like, when you play a high school football game in Texas and you get there and you don’t see a track around the field? You’re getting ready to play some football. Like, if you see a track around the field, they’re serious but they’re not serious. If you go there and you don’t see a track around the field and it’s just a football field? You better buckle up.”
“North Dakota State is one of those types of schools that they have a tradition of winning,” Sanders said. “They have a commitment to excellence.”

North Dakota State won eight national titles as a part of DII. They then jumped to the FCS level in 2004. Since then, the Bison have won as much as any program in the entire country at just about any level, especially since the start of the 2010s.
In the 13 seasons from 2011 on, NDSU has won nine national titles, including a five-peat from 2011 to 2015 and a three-peat from 2017 to 2019 which became four in five years after winning their latest in 2021. That was a 9-0 record in FCS Championship appearances before dropping their first in 2022 to South Dakota State.
In that 13-year span, North Dakota State is 172-19 (.901) overall. Three of those were undefeated finishes in 2013, 2018, and 2019.

Although a division below them still, this is quite the test for Colorado to start off with. It’s a game that Coach Prime knows his Buffaloes will have to go out and take if they want an opening victory.
“They’re detailed. They’re not gonna beat themselves,” said Sanders. “We’re going to have to beat them. They’re not gonna beat themselves.”
“We’ve gone over a multitude of scenarios, a multitude of things that we want to transpire and are preparing them for everything,” Sanders said.
Colorado may have their hands full this evening when they kick off with North Dakota State. They’ve pulled upsets before and could be set to do so again if the Buffaloes don’t assert their claim from the start.
