Deion Sanders on son Shedeur having Pat Shurmur in his ear: 'It's almost like cheating'

For the first time in college football, helmet communication is going to be allowed in 2024. It’s something that Colorado head coach Deion Sanders believes is going to help his team, in particular, this season.

As Sanders explained on the Colorado Coaches Show, having the ability for his son and quarterback Shedeur Sanders being able to hear from offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur before plays is almost like cheating.

“First of all, he has Pat. He has Pat and he has a consistency of communication,” Deion Sanders said. “The consistency of a pro that’s in his ear and telling him these things. It’s almost like cheating when now the coordinator, as well as I, get the opportunity to talk to him until 15 seconds is on the play clock.”

The new in-helmet communication rule comes in the wake of the sign-stealing scandal at Michigan. It doesn’t entirely eliminate the need for signs, particularly in the case of hurry-up and no-huddle teams. However, it does allow communication between coaches and one player on the field at a given time. In the case of the offense, that will pretty universally be the quarterback.

“This is one of the things that people take for granted with Shedeur. He’s one of the few quarterbacks I guarantee you in college football that started every game in high school, every game in college, except for one when he was hurt,” Sanders said. “So, you know how many plays that is? He’s seen every type of blitz. It’s not like — you never see him get surprised by the blitz. We may get surprised that we didn’t pick up the blitz, but he’s not surprised by this or that. He doesn’t move like that. He don’t get down like that.”

Shedeur Sanders finished the 2023 season with 3,230 passing yards for 27 touchdowns. He did that while getting sacked more than anyone else in FBS. Now, with a rebuilt offense around him, he’s looking to take another step forward and cement himself as one of the best quarterbacks in college.

Pat Shurmur wasn’t Colorado’s offensive coordinator when Deion Sanders first got to Colorado. That was Sean Lewis. However, Lewis was demoted and replaced by Shurmur mid-season. Now, the offense is entirely Shurmur’s while Lewis is the head coach at San Diego State.

“So, for him to even have a pro in his ear to tell him, ‘Okay this could happen. They probably gonna bring a weak side blitz on first through third downs. They do that every opening series. That’s what they do.’ But to have that understanding is phenomenal,” Sanders concluded.

Colorado opens its season with North Dakota State on Thursday night. That will be the first test for the coaches being able to communicate with players during games.
