As DeSean Jackson gets ready for his first season as the head coach at Delaware State, Colorado coach Deion Sanders is in his corner. Coach Prime offered another encouraging message to Jackson via social media on Tuesday.

Delaware State announced Jackson as its head coach in December, marking his first head coaching opportunity. A 15-year NFL veteran, he worked with youth football players during his F.A.S.T. camps, but has never been a head coach at the high school or college level. He was, however, the offensive coordinator this past season at Long Beach (Calif.) Woodrow Wilson Classical.

That will change in 2025 when Jackson takes the Delaware State sidelines. As he reflected on his journey to this point, Sanders expressed his pride in the journey and promised Colorado coaches would also be attending Jackson’s camp.

“Amen Coach we’re all Proud of u my brother,” Sanders wrote on X. “We’re sending @CUBuffsFootball coaches to your camp as well. God bless you man.”

Jackson put together a standout career in the NFL over his 15 seasons of action. During that time, he totaled 641 receptions for 11,263 receiving yards and 58 touchdowns. He also made three Pro Bowls and was a second team All-Pro selection.

He also tallied 72 carries in his career for 463 yards and four additional scores. Of course, Jackson was also an elite return man, running back four punts for touchdowns throughout his career.

That run in the NFL came after a decorated career at Cal. Jackson was a consensus All-American in 2006 as he totaled 1,060 yards – including a Pac-10-leading 18.9 yards per reception – and nine touchdowns.

Now, Jackson is heading back to the college ranks as a head coach. In the process, he’s fulfilling his dream of coaching at an HBCU program.

“HBCUs have much to be proud of in creating a more representative America. But that story is not simply a historical one. It continues to be written and includes the elevation of HBCU scholars and scholar athletes in every field of human endeavor,” Jackson said in a statement.

“The opportunity for me to help write another chapter here at DSU is a once-in-a-lifetime moment consistent with my journey as a young boy finding his way to manhood through mentorship, accountability, achievement, and discipline. If we build that kind of culture at Delaware State University, we will attract the right talent and radically change the trajectory of this program.  I cannot wait to get started.”

DeSean Jackson will replace Lee Hull as Delaware State’s head coach. Hull led the program for two seasons. In his two years at the helm, Delaware State posted a 2-21 overall record and an 0-10 mark in conference play.
