DeShaun Foster states UCLA players 'better be watching' Hawaii Week Zero game
On Saturday, UCLA had a rare opportunity to watch their Week 1 opponent before facing them. Hawaii defeated Delaware State 35-14 this weekend and will prepare for the Bruins in the coming week. Ahead of Hawaii’s Week 0 win, UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster addressed the importance of his players watching the Rainbow Warriors.
“They all better be watching the game,” Foster said. “I won’t have them all come in here but I’m pretty sure all of them will watch the game.”
Hawaii gave UCLA plenty to prepare for. Rainbow Warriors quarterback Brayden Schager tallied 201 passing yards and two touchdowns while avoiding any interceptions. Moreover, Schager notched 38 yards and two scores in the ground game.
Schager was far from the only threat in Hawaii’s rushing attack. The team had six different players record a carry in the win. Landon Sims led the way with a team-high 58 rushing yards.

Of course, UCLA will provide a greater challenge to Hawaii’s run game. In the 2023 campaign, the Bruins only allowed 80.8 rushing yards per game, the second-least in the country. However, it’s worth noting the team only returned 51% of its defensive production this offseason, per ESPN.

DeShaun Foster embraces new era at UCLA
Moreover, UCLA lost defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn to USC after the 2023 regular season. Now, Foster must find a way to carry on UCLA’s defensive success in his first year in the driver’s seat. He’s excited to usher in a new era of UCLA football.
“Three things you will see with my football team is discipline, respect, and enthusiasm. Those are my pillars,” Foster said. “No matter what, you should be able to see that – win, lose, or draw.
“You see my guys in the classroom? You should see that. You see them in the dorms? You should see that. Anywhere, you should see discipline, respect, and enthusiasm out of my football players,” Foster added. “I think, if we do that and we’re able to present that every game, the outcome will come out in our favor.”
On Aug. 31, the Bruins will kick off their 2024 campaign in a showdown against Hawaii at 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on CBS.
