Dick Vitale receives encouraging health update from his doctors
It’s the most wonderful time of the year. On Thursday, legendary broadcaster Dick Vitale provided a positive update on his health.
“Santa Claus came early for me & my family,” Vitale wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Just was on the phone with Dr. Rick Brown (my oncologist) Dr. Ken Meredith (bloodwork). They gave me super news that the PET SCAN was clean (NO CANCER) & my bloodwork was all very good.”
In July, Vitale announced he had been diagnosed with vocal cord cancer and would undergo treatment. This battle has been Vitale’s third fight with cancer since 2021, previously surviving lymphoma and melanoma.
Vitale initially planned on returning on Nov. 28 to cover Kentucky–Miami at Rupp Arena in the programs’ first meeting in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge. However, Vitale was forced to push back his return due to ongoing health needs related to his throat.
In typical Vitale fashion, he didn’t let the frustrating news dampen his spirits.
“While I’m disappointed with the latest developments, I remain hopeful,” Vitale said. “The cancer is gone, which is amazing news, yet the impact of the treatments has taken its toll on my voice and requires more healing.

“With the season started, I am jumping out of my shoes to be back in the college basketball arenas, calling the game I love and being around so many great colleagues and fans. I have to listen to the medical experts, who have been so good to me, and with some more rest, I know I will be back for my 45th season. I’ve been so touched by the amazing response I’ve received.”
Tom Izzo sends Dick Vitale encouraging message
Vitale has not specified a return date, but the college basketball world will certainly welcome him with open arms. Fans aren’t the only ones excited to see Vitale return to the sidelines. Earlier this month, Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo sent a heartfelt message to Vitale.
“Hope you’re doing better everyday,” Izzo wrote. “I know this is such a special week for you with the Jimmy V. event but every week is special because you never stop working. We all love you for that and I mean that!
“You have created such a culture it’s unbelievable. Doesn’t matter what sport or venue they are all supporting you. As a coach you try to impact a player or even a University. You my friend have impacted the WORLD!!! Wow now that’s a legacy.”
