Dillon Gabriel shares injury update on his hand after Week 1 win vs. Idaho
The Oregon Ducks won a closer than expected game against the Idaho Vandals in Week 1. That game saw transfer quarterback Dillon Gabriel play well, even though he appeared to injure his throwing hand early in the win.
Following the game, Gabriel shared an update on his hand, explaining that it’s not going to be an issue long-term for the star quarterback.
“Hand is good,” Dillon Gabriel said. “I guess I had my real moment of not wearing the red jersey, but it is what it is. It’s football too. So, it just comes with it. Little ice. Little ointment. You’re good.”
Despite the struggles that Oregon had as a team and the injury that Dillon Gabriel was battling during the game, he put up good numbers. Gabriel finished the day with 41 completions on 49 attempts for 380 yards and two touchdowns.

Gabriel went on to clarify that the issue wasn’t to a specific finger. It came down to banging his hand against an opponent’s helmet.

“I just hit his head, but I’m good,” Gabriel said. “Played through it. We’re solid.”
While Dillon Gabriel was able to play through a banged-up throwing hand and still put up good numbers, it’s easy to wonder if that did have an impact on Oregon’s offensive success against Idaho. After all, in his career Gabriel has been known for his ability to press the ball downfield. That didn’t happen against Idaho, though, and it’s possible that a sore hand contributed to that.
Now in his sixth season of college football, Dillon Gabriel has been healthy in all but one season. His season where he did struggle with injuries turned out to be his last with UCF in 2021. That season, he broke his clavicle and ended up taking a redshirt.
As a team, Oregon is looking to come out in Week 2 and put together a stronger effort than the 24-14 win they earned against Idaho. However, that’s also going to have to come against a step up in competition, with the Ducks welcoming Boise State to Eugene. Considered by many a contender for the Group of Five spot in the College Football Playoff, it’s going to be a tough game early in the season for Oregon.
