Drake Powell, 2024 guard, discusses ACC offer
Pittsboro (N.C.) Northwood High’s Drake Powell is tracking as one of the top sophomores in North Carolina. He averages 16.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.2 steals per game this season.
“I like to get my teammates involved,” Powell told On3 Sports. “My ball-handling will help expand my game moving forward. I would say I have improved a lot defensively. I like to compete, and I don’t like being scored on.”
The 6-foot-5 guard made a splash recently when he picked up his first offer. Drake Powell spoke exclusively with On3 about his offer.
NC State: “It felt great when I got it, I mean, getting my first offer from an ACC school. Growing up, I always wanted to play in the ACC. I think Coach (Kevin) Keatts is doing a great job over there.”

Powell’s take
“We are hearing from UNC and UNC-Greensboro,” Powell said. “I will be looking for a program where I can be myself, and they have like a family atmosphere. Location won’t matter.”
On3’s take
Drake Powell comes from an athletic family. His father played baseball and North Carolina, his sister currently plays volleyball at Virginia Tech, and his brother is currently playing basketball at Louisburg College. Powell is a lengthy guard who plays with natural competitiveness. He has a confident pull-up game and is an excellent defender, both on and off the ball. He will need to continue getting strong and shore up the 3-point shot, but Powell is trending to be a regional recruit that the highest level schools should check-in.
