Drew McKenna is the No. 65 player in the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking. The 6-foot-8 small forward at Ellicott City (MD) Glenelg Country Day is playing with the Team Loaded Va program on the Adidas 3SSB Circuit this summer.

“I have an all-around game, helping the team in different ways,” McKenna told On3. “I can rebound, score, defend, pass, whatever I need. This season I’ve learned how to affect the game outside of just scoring. Previously, I was just a pure scorer, but I’ve expanded my game.”

On3 caught up with Drew McKenna after a recent live viewing at the CBG Grassroots Tip-Off to talk recruiting.

McKenna talks visits

“I haven’t taken any official visits, and I don’t have any planned yet,” McKenna said. “I have taken unofficials to Butler, Georgetown, Maryland, and Virginia Tech. My visit to Georgetown was with the old staff, though.”

Butler: “I got to see the culture they have up there. Coach Thad Matta likes big wings there, guys who can make plays. I got to meet Greg Oden on my visit; that was cool.”

Maryland: “I saw their intensity. They play a lot of defense there; no matter how much talent they have over there, they’re always going to play tough and play defense.”

Virginia Tech: “They have an emphasis on shooting at every position in their lineup. They love their shooting and love to shoot the three.”

McKenna talks possible officials

“I’d like to take some junior year visits, get on a couple in the next month or so,” McKenna said. “I’d like to see Butler, West Virginia, Xavier, and the new staff at Georgetown.”

Xavier: “Their intensity stands out for me. They play well, they play together as a team, and they play a lot of defense. They’re just a hard-nosed, physical team. I talk with coach (Sean) Miller and the assistant coach Adam Cohen a lot. Our relationship is pretty good, and they’re excited about recruiting me.

“They play with a lot of wings and big guards. I think I could fit in perfectly there because I’m able to shoot, stretch the floor, dribble, and make decisions with the ball.”

West Virginia: “They play a lot of defense, and I like that. Their coach, DerMarr Johnson, is from the same area as me. It was cool to hear from him; he’s a legend where I’m from. Being from Prince George County, and hearing about him all my life, when he finally texted me, I was shocked. I showed my dad and everyone. It’s great.”

Butler: “They like big wings, as I said. They let their guards shoot it, and they play defense. Coach (Thad) Matta is really good at developing wings and players.”

Georgetown: “I was the first person the new staff called when they got the job. That was big to me. Coach Ed Cooley and assistant coach (Jeff) Battle reached out, and we’ve been in contact. All my family members want me to go to Georgetown because it’s in the area. They all love it, especially the old heads.”

“I’ve heard recently from UCF and Michigan too. They haven’t offered, though,” McKenna said.

In his words

“I’m going to be looking for a school that can help me develop,” McKenna said. “Develop me in all aspects, really, as a better player and a better person. I want to play for a coach that believes in me and what I can do. I’ll be looking at what players like me they’ve coached, players they developed who play similar to how I play.

“I want to get to the next level, play in the league. So whatever it takes to get me there.”
