Dylan Lonergan, Kasen Weisman among bright spots of busy week
Dylan Lonergan, Kasen Weisman and Alexander Diggs all turned heads this week.
Last week provided high school football players around Georgia a chance to back up those verified times from camps and prove their 7-on-7 highlights were legitimate. Georgia high school teams held their dress rehearsals over the past two weeks. Lightning shortened or interrupted the three games I attended this week.
That was a nuisance, but the storms didn’t keep a few things from catching my eyes. There was a lot of good accomplished in limited snaps. Here are the best things I saw last week.
Dylan Lonergan poised, accurate, reliable
Dylan Lonergan is very much a national prospect at the quarterback position already. He put out his top 12 schools just last week.
That list consisted of Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, LSU, Mississippi State, Ohio State, Oregon, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Penn State.
Lonergan stepped out into Snellville (Ga.) Brookwood’s huddle to begin his third season as the team’s starting quarterback.
The junior has played a lot of football. It showed in the team’s scrimmage on Friday night. Lonergan didn’t have an incompletion for much of the scrimmage.
No official stats were kept, but Lonergan tossed three touchdowns in a half of football. He looked calm. He threw accurately as he hit multiple receivers in stride.
On a deep throw early in the game, Lonergan didn’t strain to reach his target nearly 40 yards down the field.
If Friday was any indication, Lonergan is in for another big year for Brookwood.
Kasen Weisman going to be QB to be reckoned with
Kasen Weisman of Douglasville (Ga.) South Paulding High School made play after play last Friday night. He ran for an 80-yard touchdown on a read pass option. He threw for 257 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
Weisman is the prototypical gunslinging quarterback. When the football is in his hands a big play is possible.

The ball pops out of his hand. He delivers the ball with a nice touch. Weisman is an excellent athlete, but he doesn’t let that deter him from playing quarterback first.
Two of Weisman’s three touchdown passes came as he alluded the Brookwood defense. Weisman was able to keep his focus downfield before launching accurately throw strikes toward his receivers.
Weisman is one of the more fun quarterbacks to watch in the 2023 class. The 6-foot-3, 175-pound quarterback has offers from California, Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville State. There is a gaggle of Power Five programs showing interest.
Alexander Diggs set for big year as weapon alongside Lonergan
Brookwood lost the team’s top three top receivers from last year. Georgia commits De’Nylon Morrisette and Marquis Groves-Killebrew have transferred. Samuel Mbake also transferred.
But that allowed Alexander Diggs to put on a show on Thursday.
The 5-foot-7 running back scored three touchdowns in a little under two quarters of play. Diggs’ first score came as a receiver streaking down the sidelines.
He then broke a 50 plus yard touchdown run on a draw.
He then caught another long touchdown pass from Lonergan later in the first quarter. Diggs showed versatility and vision in his touches.
He’ll be one to watch this season as touches will be available for him in the Bronco offense. Diggs has a 4.0 grade-point average. His only offer is to Davidson at the moment. Ivy League programs have shown interest.
