Tennessee is off to a flying start in 2024, specifically on the ground with running back Dylan Sampson. Head coach Josh Heupel‘s offense may seem pass-heavy with Nico Iamaleava out there but his bread and butter has always been handing the ball off. Sampson is providing excellent results as well, helping the Vols take down Chattanooga and NC State in big ways.

Winning in college football is a lot of fun and brings excitement to a locker room. But Sampson loves how composed Tennessee has been despite getting these momentum-building wins. After victory margins of 66 and 41, it would be easy to look ahead instead of slowing down and taking things one game at a time.

“I think the best thing about it is everybody is level-headed,” Sampson said during Wednesday’s episode of Andy & Ari On3. “Really not listening to outside noise because the same people that hype you up, when you trip up a little bit, will be the same people in your ear… I think the best thing we can do for ourselves is take it week by week.”

Feelings of the 2022 season might be palpable around Knoxville. Last year saw the Vols finish 8-4 during the regular season before taking down Iowa in a bowl game. Not bad by any means but road losses to Florida and Missouri were the difference between a good and great season.

Getting back to the level of SEC and College Football Playoff contention began immediately following the Iowa game. Sampson saw the progress being made behind closed doors through workouts and practices.

Now, the rest of the country is beginning to see what a threat Tennessee could be in 2024.

“We know the work that we put in from January, spring ball, fall camp. We started to realize the pieces that we had coming together. Now, we just have the ability to go out there and show it, connect with ourselves. People start, obviously, seeing it too.”

As the Vols go week-by-week, next up on the schedule is Kent State. From the outside, another large win is expected at Neyland Stadium before heading on the road for the first time this year. Oklahoma will be the opponent, making for a reunion for Heupel, and the Sooners’ debut SEC game.
