Unfortunate news came out of Greenville, North Carolina on Friday when college football insider Pete Thamel reported that East Carolina cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. has suffered from a season-ending injury. Tearing his ACL during practice this week and putting an end to his senior season with the Pirates.

Revel is regarded as one of the best cornerbacks in the country and top overall players at the Group of Five level of college football. A projected first-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft tabbed as the No. 2 corner prospect according to ESPN NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper.

His season may have been cut short, but in just three games Revel was able to show how impactful of a player he is. Recording eight tackles, breaking up two passes, and getting his hands on two interceptions, including a 50-yard pick-six against Appalachian State in Week 3.

Last season for the Pirates, in his first year with the program, Revel had a breakout season. Ending the year with 55 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 14 pass breakups, an interception, a sack, a forced fumble, and a pair of blocked kicks to earn Second-Team All-American Athletic Conference honors.

Revel was an under-the-radar high school recruit out of Winston Salem, North Carolina who played at the Junior College level for the first two seasons of his collegiate career. Attending Louisburg College before taking his talents to ECU and becoming an NFL prospect. Named to 2024 Chuck Bednarik, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Paycom Jim Thorpe Award, Senior Bowl, and East-West Shrine Bowl Watch Lists heading into the season.

“He has a chance to be this year’s Quinyon Mitchell,” an NFL scout said to Thamel. “He’s as talented of a player as there is in a Group of Five conference. The size, the length, and the movement skills, for being as tall and long as he is. You don’t’ see a body type as rangy and fluid as he is at that size.”

Revel’s injury was described as a ‘freak’ one that occurred during ECU’s practice on Wednesday. As he will now shift his attention toward the road to recovery and getting back healthy for a return to the field at either the NFL level or back to college assuming he obtains a medical redshirt.
