Eastern Kentucky forces Western Kentucky to change uniforms, ratchets up pettiness in rivalry
Western Kentucky took a licking in Week 1, as they fell 63-0 against Alabama in Tuscaloosa, but they were looking to keep on ticking in Week 2, returning home for a showdown with Eastern Kentucky on Saturday evening.
The Hilltoppers were looking to make it special for their home crowd, planning a “White Out” for the clash with the Colonels, which they started sharing as a promotion back in July. However, as college football rivalries bring a new sense of pettiness to the world, Eastern Kentucky has decided to stop Western Kentucky from pulling it off.
Check out the statement below from Western Kentucky, where they revealed Eastern Kentucky has exercised “their right as the visiting team to wear white uniforms,” which in turn forces Western Kentucky “to wear red jerseys on Saturday.”
Even though Western Kentucky will be wearing red, the Hilltoppers still would like their fans to wear white, “We were hoping EKU would agree to allow us to wear white on Saturday, as many other opponents have in past years. We still encourage our fans to show up, be loud and wear white. Go Tops!”

While there’s no rule stating the Colonels have to allow the Hilltoppers to wear white, it’s usually something other teams don’t have a problem with. Still, if you don’t have a dog in the fight, it’s tough not to enjoy seeing the reaction from fans of both teams, along with the college football world as a whole.

Eastern Kentucky even boasted on social media about their decision to wear white, showcasing the uniforms the Colonels will be rocking on Saturday evening at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium, which you can see below.
Those uniforms are snazzy, for sure. It’s certainly going to rile up the Hilltoppers crowd though, even more than they already would’ve been for a rivalry showdown.
While the Hilltoppers were slammed by Alabama in Week 1, it didn’t go much better for the Colonels, they score seven points against Mississippi State, but they still lost by 49 points in Starkville.
A win will be paramount to both teams on Saturday, regardless of what uniform they’re wearing for the showdown. Eastern Kentucky and Western Kentucky will clash at 7:00 p.m. ET, and the game can be seen on ESPN+.
