Georgetown coach Ed Cooley appeared to get into an altercation with a Xavier fan at the end of Tuesday night’s game. The incident occurred in the final seconds of the Musketeers’ win over the Hoyas.

As time began to wind down Tuesday night, Georgetown attempted to get one final shot off before the buzzer. It missed, but when it did, Cooley was starting to walk toward the fans behind the basket.

Xavier’s athletics director Greg Christopher was part of the group to break things up. Cooley eventually walked away toward the handshake line.

Georgetown entered Tuesday night’s game looking to get back to .500 in Big East play. The Hoyas were 5-6 in league action and 14-8 overall as they hit the road to take on Xavier, which had an identical conference record.

The Musketeers took a 40-36 lead into halftime as the game started out close, and it remained that way in the second half. While Georgetown was able to keep pace with Xavier, the Hoyas could never jump out in front and eventually fell 74-69.

Micah Peavy led all scorers with 27 points for Georgetown, going 11-for-19 from the field and 3-for-6 from three-point territory. Thomas Sorber also added 17 points for the Hoyas.

Xavier had a more balanced scoring attack in Tuesday’s victory. Dailyn Swain had 18 points while Zach Freemantle added 17 and Marcus Forster recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

As for why Georgetown couldn’t get over the hump, Ed Cooley said it came down to the little details. However, he expressed confidence the Hoyas could get there – and they’re not the team they were before he arrived.

“This is, I think, our fifth road game, and it’s come down to the last two minutes every game,” Cooley said. “So there’s growth there. We’ll get there. We’re not there yet. I think we have very good players. We make a lot of mistakes – those little things that catch up to us. But there’s still a lot of basketball to be played. The good thing is, we have shown an incredible change as far as our competitive spirit than we [had] a year ago from today. The players are getting better. … I think we’re vastly underrated, and not a lot of teams are going to want to play us.

“We’re not the old Georgetown team. Everybody’s snickering, ‘Oh, I wonder how good they’re going to be.’ That’s alright. That’s alright. I can’t wait until this machine just keeps growing and growing and growing. That’s why I’m so edgy right now. We’re not there yet. There’ll be something to be said about that. We’ll be having a different song really, really soon.”
