Legendary Alabama Crimson Tide football practice official Eddie Conyers reportedly fell last Friday, breaking his right hip. On Sunday, he would undergo surgery in Birmingham on the injury.

This comes just a month after Conyers’ 76th wedding anniversary. He has spent more than 60 years as a practice official for the Crimson Tide and was 96 years old at the start of the 2024 season.

“I’m thinking of retiring when I reach 100,” Conyers previously told AL.com.

In his long career at Alabama, Eddie Conyers has seen some legends come through the program. Recently, that included former head coach Nick Saban, who would joke with his practice official. According to Conyers, “Coach Saban said I’m the second-best official in the world. Everyone else is tied for first.”

Of course, Conyers’ time at Alabama goes well back beyond his time with Saban. In fact, it goes back all the way to the legendary Bear Bryant. He was looking for officials to help out at practices back then and approached Conyers. It was a simple “Yes, sir,” from Conyers and he’s been a practice official at Alabama since then.

That was in 1962. Since then, Alabama has won 12 national championships and 24 SEC Championships. Countless legends have played on the practice field in Tuscaloosa during that time. So, it’s safe to say that Eddie Conyers has seen all there is to see in program history.

At the time, Conyers was in his early 30s. Since then, he’s had the opportunity to see himself become one of the legends of Alabama football in his own way. After all, it’s rare to see any official in sports, let alone a practice official stay in that job long enough to become someone who fans, players, and alumni all know and gravitate toward.

Over the course of that time, the only thing that has lasted longer is Conyers’ marriage to his wife, Peggy. Going strong for 76 years, he says it’s because “We make sure we go out twice a week. I go out on Tuesdays, and she goes out on Saturdays. We’ve been married so long, we’re on our second bottle of Tobasco.”

As of now, it’s unclear how long Conyers is going to be on the mend from his surgery. Hopefully, he’ll be able to bounce back and be back on the practice field soon.

Spring practice for the Crimson Tide is right around the corner now, and the A-Day Spring Game is scheduled for April 12th.
