Tennessee State head coach Eddie George is emerging as a target for the Bowling Green head coach job, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported. He was one of three interviews for the position Saturday.

Bowling Green is in the midst of a rare March coaching search after head coach Scot LoefFler left to become the Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterbacks coach. It also opened up a 30-day window for BGSU players to enter the transfer portal.

George – the College Football Hall of Famer who shined at Ohio State – has been the head coach at Tennessee State since 2021 and has a 24-22 record. He took the Tigers from a 5-6 record in 2021 to a 9-4 mark in 2024. That includes a 6-2 record in conference play to secure a spot in the FCS playoffs.

During this coaching cycle, Eddie George also interviewed for the Chicago Bears’ head coaching vacancy. That job ultimately went to Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

Tennessee State is George’s first college head coaching opportunity following a decorated career at Ohio State and in the NFL with the Houston Oilers, later the Tennessee Oilers and Titans, and the Dallas Cowboys.

George put together a Hall of Fame career at Ohio State, winning the Heisman Trophy in 1995 amid an All-American season. He ran for 1,927 yards and 24 touchdowns that year to bring home the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s top running back, among his many other accolades.

The Houston Oilers then selected George as the No. 14 overall pick in the 1996 NFL Draft, and he set multiple franchise records during his time with the team. He made four Pro Bowls and won the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 1996 as he ran for 1,368 yards and eight touchdowns.

Loeffler left Bowling Green after amassing a 27-41 record over his six years. However, the Falcons made three straight bowl games before his departure, and school president Rodney K. Rogers said that speaks to the impact he had on the program.

“Coach Loeffler has made a tremendous impact in rebuilding and reshaping BGSU Football, developing student-athletes and growing engagement across our learning community and the region,” Rogers said in a statement. “Scot has been dedicated to not only BGSU Football, but to all our student-athletes and BGSU Athletics, as well as our Falcon Marching Band and spirit programs.

“He cares deeply about player development and student success, and we wish him all the best as he continues his coaching career in the NFL with the Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles.”
