EJ Smith takes jab at Florida over father, Emmitt, being Mr. Two Bits vs. Texas A&M
Florida may have known what they were doing with Emmitt Smith finally being Mr. Two Bits last weekend for their game against Texas A&M. Still, EJ Smith thought it would backfire for the Gators in the end.
EJ Smith, a running back for the Aggies, spoke about his father taking part in the tradition for his alma mater ahead of kickoff for the game. He said he was glad to see it because he knew it was about the only enjoyment that they’d have all afternoon in The Swamp.
“That turned me up even more because I knew they wouldn’t be loud for long,” said Smith per Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle.
The tradition has roots that go back over three-quarters of a century. It then came to be in 2013 as the selected guest leads the crowd inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in a chant.

For example, Jevon Kearse was Mr. Two Bits for the opener against Miami.
As one of the all-time great Gators, Smith had long been offered the chance to be Mr. Two Bits for a game in Gainesville. However, with his son playing there this weekend, he finally took the opportunity and did so for the conference opener for both teams.

This is EJ Smith’s first season with the Aggies with him as a graduate senior after four years at Stanford. He arrived as the No. 77 RB and No. 883 overall transfer per On3’s 2024 Transfer Portal Top Players. He did so after posting 943 yards from scrimmage and six total touchdowns in his collegiate career. Now, in 2024, Smith has rushed 10 times for 48 yards with A&M. That includes six carries for 24 yards this weekend against the Gators.
Smith was eventually right too about how quiet the road environment would get for Florida. Texas A&M won 33-20 in a game that wasn’t really that close as they held a 20-0 lead at halftime and led by as much as 26 in the third quarter. That was already the second very disappointing loss for the Gators through just three games this fall.
This was a neat family moment for the Smiths as both dad and child were parts of this game. Still, it was the son and his team who got the best of his father and his on Saturday.
