With the fashion in which Missouri won their opener on Thursday, Drew Pyne came off the sideline and played quarterback in the second half. It was a moment that the veteran earned and that Eli Drinkwitz was glad to see.

Drinkwitz spoke about Pyne’s opportunity in their 51-0 victory over Murray State following the shutout. He thought he played well overall in his snaps against the Racers. He also had a lot of pride in him making the most of that chance after what he has done since joining them at Mizzou.

“I thought he played an excellent half,” said Drinkwitz. “Made some really good decisions, showed toughness. Didn’t show a ton of athleticism on that quarterback run but that’s not why he’s here.”

“Was really proud, you know, of Drew,” Drinkwitz said. “The way the season ended for him last year? For him to come back and the way he has been just an awesome teammate, pushed Brady but also complimented him. For him to get a half of football in there and was just making great reads, you know, and putting the ball exactly where it needs to be.”

Pyne transferred to CoMo as a graduate student this offseason following the first four years of his collegiate career at Notre Dame and Arizona State. With those programs, he completed 58.1% of his throws for 2,530 yards, 26 touchdowns, and nine interceptions over 19 appearances.

Now, in his debut with the Tigers last night, Pyne went 10-11 (90.9%) for 82 yards. He also had a rush for eight yards. That production led to points on all three of his drives from the mid-third quarter on with a touchdown and a pair of field goals.

This was after Brady Cook went 19-30 (63.3%) for 218 yards and a touchdown as the starter.

Winning by 51 provided Pyne with the shot to get back on the field at his latest program. Drinkwitz was happy to get him in there too, especially with how he played to close out the win.

“Really impressed with him,” said Drinkwitz.

Cook on Missouri’s opening win vs. Murray State: ‘We showed we’re a good football team’

After their 51-0 season-opening win, Brady Cook reflected on his performance.

“I thought I was alright. Thought I made some plays,” Cook said. “I distributed the ball to a lot of different receivers. And, like I said, we’re going to clean up the execution.

“I got a lot of work to do on timing and just getting the game speed with these deep balls down the field. But we’ll work on it. We’ll get back to it.”

Cook believes the Tigers’ miscues were simply early-season mishaps and are fixable.

“The deep ball, obviously, we didn’t connect how we wanted to but the looks were there,” Cook said. “The timing was almost there. We’ll work on it this week. We’ll be able to connect.”

“I think we showed people that we’re going to start fast. We have an explosive offense. A defense that gives up zero points in Week 1? That’s huge. That’s big for the offense. So I think we showed we’re a good football team and we have a lot of ball left.”
