Eli Drinkwitz reveals Gus Malzahn's fast food orders at multiple restaurants
Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz got his start in college football working as a quality control assistant under then Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn. And the life of quality control coaches and graduate assistants in college football is far from glamorous. On a podcast with David Pollack, Drinkwitz revealed that he spent many of his days making food runs for Malzahn.
He’s got all of Malzahn’s fast food orders memorized.
First, here’s his Chick Fil A order. “For breakfast, he’s gonna get a sausage burrito, he’s gonna get hash browns, and he’s gonna get a Dr. Pepper,” Drinkwitz explained.
Then there’s Sonic. “Sonic, he’s gonna get a supersonic double cheeseburger,” the Missouri head coach continued.
Malzahn also enjoyed Jimmy John’s. “Jimmy John’s, he’s gonna get an Italian nightclub,” Drinkwitz said. “And at Taco Bell, he’s gonna get soft tacos. And he’s gonna get about six of ’em.”
How did Malzahn handle a diet like that?
Drinkwitz said that the former Auburn head coach had control over his body, talking to himself and convincing himself to not get sick. Malzahn even said that he hadn’t missed work in 28 years, so clearly, the diet seemed to work for him.

Drinkwitz also performed many other tasks as a quality control coach
In Drinkwitz’s first year as a quality control coach for the Auburn Tigers, one of his most important tasks was getting the coffee hot and ready for Malzahn. Although it was a bit more stressful than you might realize. He had to get into the office before Malzahn. According to Drinkwitz, the Tigers OC was “pretty religious” about getting into the office at 7:00 AM and leaving well past midnight.

In an excellent article written by Souichi Terada of the Kansas City Star, it’s easy to see why Drinkwitz is so loyal to Malzahn. The Missouri head coach entered college football coaching after working his way up the high school ranks. Drinkwitz worked his way up to become the offensive coordinator at Springdale High School in Springdale, Arkansas. That’s the same place that Malzahn used to coach as well.
And Drinkwitz eventually asked Malzahn for the job with Auburn as a quality control coach. And the Missouri head man got his start in college coaching with the Tigers. The only catch was it paid $15,000 and offered zero benefits. Somehow, he and his family were able to survive on that for a few years.
As a quality control coach, Drinkwitz performed many different tasks: drawing up play cards, breaking down film, and getting other coaches their breakfast and coffee. He even drove assistant coaches to the airport for recruiting trips or when they had to speak at coaching clinics.
It’s been quite amazing to see his rise up the coaching ranks, leading the Missouri Tigers to an 11-2 record last year. It was their best season since 2012, when Gary Pinkel was the head coach in Columbia.
