Elijah Saunders, a 6-foot-8 power forward out of Phoenix (Ariz.) Sunnyslope has committed to San Diego State basketball for the class of 2022, he tells On3.
Saunders is the Aztecs’ first commitment of the class. San Diego State is also targeting Miles Byrd, Koren Johnson, among others.
Saunders ultimately chose SDSU over Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Miami, and South Carolina. He also received offers from St. John’s, DePaul, UNLV, Nevada, among others.
Elijah Saunders on why he chose San Diego State
“It just felt like home for me,” Saunders said. “I think it’s the best at San Deigo State, with the coaches and basketball fit for me. After every visit I went on, when I got home, I would just think about what Coach (Brian) Dutcher and his staff were telling me. The other schools were nice, but it wasn’t like San Diego State.”

Saunders continued, “I think I’ll have a great opportunity to play as a freshman, and compete for minutes. That’s not too big of a thing, because everything is earned. But I feel like I can just fit right in with the guys.”
How would Saunders describe his game?
“I would say I can play the 4, or the 3. I’m versatile, I can shoot the ball, put it on the floor, defend, rebound. I just feel like I can do a lot of things on the court, very different than your traditional four-man.”
