In September, Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson safety Tony Mitchell narrowed his list to seven schools: Florida, Georgia, LSU, Texas A&M, Alabama, Clemson, and Oregon. Now, a little more than five months later, Mitchell has plans to narrow down to five.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder tweeted Wednesday that his top five schools list will be coming soon. Mitchell is the No. 18 prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 2 safety and the No. 2 junior prospect in Alabama.

It remains to be seen which five schools ultimately end up on that list, but one that is pretty much guaranteed is Alabama. The Crimson Tide have a 95.1 percent chance to get Mitchell’s commitment, according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM).

But others still remain very much in the mix. Texas A&M, Florida, and Georgia are all making pushes to beat out the Crimson Tide, who have largely dominated recruiting in the state of Alabama.

Mitchell broke down those three schools earlier this week in an interview with On3’s Joseph Hastings.

Texas A&M: “Everyone on staff, they genuine. They’re gonna show love and they’re gonna keep it real with you.”

Georgia: “I feel like I’m high on their board just because I talk to them a lot. Everybody on staff love me. They text me and stuff so I feel like I’m very high.”

Florida: “It was great getting to see coach Napier for the first time and meeting the new staff. He really got the right people there, and I feel like he will turn the program around and get Florida back to how they used to be.”

And while Tony Mitchell has been on campus at the likes of Auburn and Georgia multiple times over the past few years, he hasn’t been anywhere as much as he’s been at Alabama. Dating back to 2020, Mitchell has visited the Crimson Tide seven times. That, along with a recent expert prediction from On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons, has Nick Saban and Co. in the proverbial driver’s seat.
