Ernest Cooper has committed to Stanford.

Stanford continues to roll on the recruiting trail. Two weeks after landing coveted defensive back Kamari Ramsey, Stanford picked up its biggest commitment in the Class of 2022 on Monday from four-star EDGE Ernest Cooper.

Cooper, who is 6-foot-4 and 235 pounds, said he picked the Cardinal over Texas A&M. Ranked as the No. 46 player in the On300, Cooper is a big boost for David Shaw’s class.

“Cooper is a can’t miss prospect,” On3 national analyst Gerry Hamilton said. “He’s just as talented off the field as on it. A high school and soon-to-be college coach can depend on Cooper to be consistent and give great effort.”

Scouting Ernest Cooper

Ernest Cooper reported more than 25 scholarship offers, including from college football powers Ohio State, Alabama, Oklahoma, Oregon, before picking Stanford. He took an official visit to Palo Alto, Calif., on June 18. Cooper also visited A&M on June 24 and Ohio State on June 11.

“On the field, he sports an 80-inch wingspan and very good change of direction ability for his size,” Hamilton said. “He will develop into a high-level technician with the athletic ability and agility to also pressure the quarterback.

“He’s physical at the point of attack and does a very good job playing with his eyes.”

Cooper earned first-team all-district honors as a junior and was named the Class 6A, District 4 sophomore of the year in 2019. Last year, he racked up 63 tackles, 14 tackles for a loss and seven sacks.

“I’ll never forget being at a hot August practice at Arlington Martin prior to the start of the 2020 season,” Hamilton said. “Cooper was the last player on the field running laps around the field. That’s the type of player Stanford is getting.”

With Cooper’s commit, Stanford now has 16 pledges and currently ranks second in the Pac-12 behind the Oregon Ducks. The Cardinal are also in line for another top 25 recruiting class after finishing in the top 10 in 2021.
