Seth Greenberg names his top five teams of the week
College basketball is hitting the home stretch as the calendar turns from the month of January to February. ESPN analyst Seth Greenberg named his top five teams of the week, naming two bonafide blue blood programs after top 10 matchup wins.
VCU Rams – So far this season, Davidson has been the top team of the Atlantic 10. Going into the week the Wildcats had not dropped a conference game and were finding ways to win games. That was until they ran into VCU, who was able to knock them off 70-68 behind 16 points from forward Vance Williams.
A few days later, the Rams had an in-city rivalry matchup with the Richmond Spiders. It was another tight one, also winning by two points, 66-64. Now, VCU is just one game behind Davidson in the Atlantic 10 and will be able to compete for the regular-season conference championship down the stretch.
Kentucky Wildcats – Last week ended with a road loss to Auburn, separating Kentucky from the SEC’s top team. However, this week was a big bounce back for the Wildcats.
Tuesday was an overtime victory over the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Forward Oscar Tshiebwe had 21 points and 22 rebounds, as he continues to dominate every night he plays.
Fast forward to Saturday and Kentucky maybe pulled off the best win of the season of any team in college basketball thus far. Not only did Jon Calipairi’s team win on the road against Kansas — it was never close. Keion Brooks has 27 points, leading UK to an 8-62 win at Allen Fieldhouse.
UCLA Bruins – Thanks to some COVID-19 issues with the UCLA program earlier in the year, it was a rare week with three games for the Bruins. It began with a top 10 matchup with the Wildcats at Pauley Pavilion. They dominated from start to finish and took down the Wildcats.
Cal and Stanford traveled to Los Angeles on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. UCLA was able to take care of business there as well, winning both by over 20 points. Mick Cronin’s team is now up to No. 3 in the latest AP poll with another game for college basketball against Arizona on the docket.

Utah State Aggies – It was a rough start to Mountain West play for the Utah State Aggies. Of their six games, they dropped five of them and were trending toward the bottom of the standings.
San Diego State, who was once considered the top team in the conference, came to town. Not only did the Aggies get a much-needed victory, but they blew out the Aztecs. Forward Justin Bean had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Next up was Nevada, which Utah State nearly beat by 30 points. The mountain may be too high to climb to get back to the top of the conference standings but come Mountain West tournament time — the Aggies will be a tough out.
Jacksonville State Gamecocks – Entering conference play just one game over .500, nobody in the ASun has been able to crack Jacksonville State. Not even Liberty, who entered the Tuesday matchup also undefeated. The Gamecocks won on the road in convincing fashion. 77-67.
The week of games began on Thursday night, with another game away from home in Kennesaw State. Guard Darrian Adams had 22 points, while center Brandon Huffman secured a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
