Surprises abound on Saturday

The Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs silenced Arkansas and Ole Miss supporters over the weekend and showed why they’re the top programs in the country, hands down.

Cincinnati got an opportunity to punch above their weight class and didn’t disappoint, taking down Notre Dame 24-13 in South Bend. Undefeated squads Coastal Carolina and SMU continue to represent, along with the Bearcats, for the Group of Five conferences.

Kentucky stunned the Florida Gators in Lexington with a 20-13 victory and Mississippi State dashed what remained of Texas A&M‘s SEC West hopes with a 26-22 upset.

Oregon also took a Week 5 upset loss, courtesy of the Stanford Cardinal. Stanford got off to a hot start and delivered late, too, to the tune of 31-24 in overtime.

The Auburn Tigers continue to rise in the rankings through Week 5. They escaped Death Valley with a 24-19 win over LSU.

There’s sure to be more movement coming at the top of the ESPN power rankings after this weekend’s slate with No. 3 Iowa and No. 4 Penn State meeting in Iowa City.

Herbstreit’s View

ESPN College GameDay analyst Kirk Herbstreit released his top six teams after Week 5, and his selections vary a bit from ESPN’s own power rankings.

There’s no disagreeing with Alabama and Georgia at No. 1 and No. 2, however, Herbstreit has Iowa at No. 3 and Cincinnati at No. 4, instead of the Nittany Lions.

Penn State comes in at No. 5 and the Oklahoma Sooners at No. 6. Herbstreit and the GameDay crew will see the Sooners on Saturday as they take on Texas in the Red River Showdown.
