It didn’t take long for the ESPN broadcast crew breaking down the latest College Football Playoff rankings to get a little critical of the committee’s selections. And Texas was a target.

The Longhorns checked in at No. 3 overall in this week’s edition, sitting pretty when it comes to getting into the field and potentially securing a first-round bye.

But at least a couple of the analysts had questions about that lofty ranking.

Host Rece Davis quickly asked the crew what Texas’ best win to date is, and the answer came in hot from analyst Greg McElroy.

Vandy,” the former Alabama quarterback said. “Yeah, Vandy. Exactly.”

McElroy would expand on his view that Texas is ranked a little too high at the moment given the overall body of work. Though, in defense of the Longhorns, they weren’t the only team to earn the overrated designation from McElroy.

“Texas and Penn State being lifted up based on what they’d done and the eye test, I get that,” McElroy said. “Look, I’ve watched Texas just like the rest of us, just like the committee members. There’s seven or eight people that either played college football or coached college football. So they’re watching the players and I don’t blame them for being super impressed.”

Texas looks the part, to be sure. For one, the team has already endured an injury to the team’s starting quarterback and came away looking even stronger for it.

Arch Manning was perfectly up to the task while Quinn Ewers was recovering. Moreover, there are weapons all over the field.

That’s not enough for McElroy right now when it comes to Texas.

“The problem is the resume doesn’t support a top-three ranking,” McElroy said. “They are up there on eye test and ceiling, and until we see it all put together it’s tough for me to get totally on board with them being up there right now.”
