Every member of the Army football team carried American flags as they ran onto the field on Saturday ahead of their game against Western Kentucky on the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

Army (1-0) hosted Western Kentucky (1-0) at Michie Stadium in front of fans for the first time since November 2019 after the COVID pandemic prevented fans from attending Michie during the 2020 season.

Army has gotten off to a hot start in its home-opener, off to a quick 14-0 lead after a trick play to put the Black Knights up by two scores.

Midway through the second-quarter, Army quarterback Christian Anderson has thrown for 64 yards and one touchdown, adding 24 more yards on the ground. Braheam Murphy was on the other end of Anderson’s touchdown pass, hauling it in from 40 yards out.

Last season, the 4,000-member strong Corps of Cadets were allowed to socially distance themselves through the stadium, but Saturday saw the return of nearly 30,000 fans.

During the game, the Army football team is set to honor the 10th Mountain Division, a light infantry division based at Fort Drum, New York. Currently, the 10th Mountain Division retains its “mountain” designation for historical purposes.

Army opened its season with a 43-10 win over Georgia State. In the win, Army rushed for 258 yards and limited Georgia State to just 177 total yards, forcing two Georgia State turnovers.

The Black Knights will look to limit Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe, a graduate transfer from Houston Baptist. Zappe passed for 10,004 yards while at Houston Baptist. In Week One against Tennessee-Martin, Zappe competed 28 of 35 throws for 424 yards and seven touchdowns.

Saturday represents the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks on New York City, Washington, D.C., and a deserted field in Western Pennsylvania.
