There might not be a more contested recruitment over the final two months of the 2023 recruiting cycle than that of Austin (Texas) Westlake four-star EDGE and Oklahoma commit Colton Vasek.

The No. 136 prospect in the On3 Consensus, Vasek committed to the Sooners over hometown Texas, as well as Oregon, back in early August.

That hasn’t stopped the Longhorns from pursuing him though, and with Oklahoma’s early-season struggles, those pitches aren’t falling on deaf ears. After Vasek visited the Longhorns last weekend, the chatter has picked up even more. And so has the beef between the two rival programs.

On Thursday, former Texas defensive tackle Roy Miller took to Twitter to make his pitch.

“@ColtonVasek I know it’s kind of late but it real is not,” he tweeted. “I decommitted from OU too. Very tough decision as a young man. But trust me nothing like playing college football close to home. Think of this a business decision. Get done playing football where do you move back to? Norman or Austin? That’s what sold me good luck!!

He continued: “Went to OU on an official and the highlight was a party at a restaurant. Bobby Jack told me OU would win with or without me if I kept visiting other places….I began to wondered what would I do in Norman if I wasn’t a great football player…work at Cracker Barrel? No way”

Ex-Sooners star Gerald McCoy responds

Not long after, former Oklahoma star and first-round NFL draft pick Gerald McCoy chimed in, replying: “Boy…stop all that begging!!”

The war of words is just the latest example of what a heated rivalry it is between the Sooners and Longhorns, with Texas getting the leg up most recently with a 49-0 win over OU in the Red River Showdown earlier this month.

As crunch time hits in Vasek’s recruitment, things are sure to heat up even more.
