Five-Star Plus+ Suwanee (Ga.) Collins Hill athlete Travis Hunter gave us one of the most shocking moments in recruiting history by flipping from Florida State to FCS Jackson State and head coach Deion Sanders.

Rumors began swirling Wednesday morning that Hunter, the No. 1 prospect in the On3 Consensus was spurning the Seminoles for Coach Prime. Yahoo! national college football writer Pete Thamel later reported that the Florida State staff has been informed Hunter is going to Jackson State.

And soon after, On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons put in a new prediction for Hunter to land with the Tigers.

His commitment to an FCS program is unprecedented, but Hunter has always been known to have a flair for the dramatics. On3’s expert recruiting analysts break down why this is such a momentous event in high school recruiting history.

Chad Simmons, On3 Director of Recruiting

“Travis Hunter is about the brand. He has created that brand for himself, so who better to work with, learn from (football and business), than Deion Sanders. The smoke is real. It would be game-changing to see Jackson State come in and land one of the premier players I’ve ever covered. Hunter should be an instant star whenever he goes. He would put a lot of eyes on Jackson State and that football program. Travis is a kid others want to play with, so if Jackson State can pull this off, it would have a significant impact. He is entertaining on the field, off the field and now he on signing day.”

Gerry Hamilton, On3 Senior National Recruiting Analyst

“I can’t recall a 5-star prospect ever signing with an FCS program that was good to go academically. This is a huge, huge, huge win for Deion Sanders. Make no mistake, this places Sanders on the fast track to be a Power 5 head coach. And this is a devastating loss for Florida State. Not much shocks you in this business after 20-plus years. My jaw has been dropped. Incredible.”

On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power

“Seeing the No. 1 prospect in the On3 Consensus sign with a FCS program is unprecedented. If you were to come up with the most wild storylines possible, this might be at the top. It’s obviously huge for Deion Sanders, Jackson State and HBCU football. Travis Hunter is one of the best high school football players I’ve ever seen. He’s a legitimate five-star talent at receiver and corner. It’s stunning.”

Travis Hunter Scouting Summary

“The rare prospect with five-star ability on both sides of the ball as a cornerback and wide receiver. The most impactful non-quarterback in high school football as a junior and senior. Also among the best players we’ve ever seen on the 7-on-7 circuit. Possesses transcendent ball skills with the ability to high-point and make catches in traffic at an alarmingly high rate. A highly instinctual ballhawk at cornerback with the ability to read quarterbacks and receivers and jump routes. A high volume target at receiver who is capable of winning at all levels with route-running quickness and savvy to go with the elite ball skills. Also a fierce competitor who elevates the play of teammates. Led his team to its first state title as a senior. Will go down as one of the best high school football players in Georgia history.” —On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power
